Vizela Thermal Springs The practice of thermalism in Vizela dates from the time of the Romans. Sulphur, sodium and hyperthermia waters are advised for respiratory diseases, rheumatic diseases, musculoskeletal diseases and skin diseases. Started to build in 1870, the main thermal spa has a very rich architecture that characterizes its era, being one of the largest in the country. In an environment where the greatest convenience is provided, the properties of these waters bring thousands of people from Vizela every year from everywhere. Located in the center of the city, the Thermal Springs Park was built between 1885 and 1886. It was designed and planted by the distinguished florist and horticulturist José Marques Loureiro, owner of Horto das Virtudes, and by the landscape gardener Jerónimo Monteiro da Costa, author of the gardens of Arca D'Água, Carregal and other historic Porto gardens. This space is considered to be the "lung" of Vizela, due to its vast vegetation, distinguishing here numerous species of trees, some of them centennial. With a vast area of dense vegetation, this is the ideal place to stroll, rest, play sports (namely tennis) or simply enjoy nature in the tea room. |
