The Gardens and the Feast of Camellias
"Celorico de Basto Capital of the Camellias" has officially become a registered trademark. Sign of this power are the grandiose and beautiful gardens of meticulously ornate camellias, with a very characteristic topiary. All the emblazoned and manorial houses have this plant, being possible to visit many of them. The taste for camellias led the people to plant them in their gardens, making Celorico de Basto a true flower garden. There are many specimens scattered throughout the territory, a reason of curiosity for amateurs and collectors. The International Camellia Festival takes place annually on the 3rd weekend of March. Known as the "Queens of Winter", camellias impose their beauty at a time of the year when climatic conditions are less favourable, thus painting winter with a rainbow of colours.
