Riverside Area Designed by the architect Fernando Távora, the Liberdade Square houses the monument by the sculptor José Rodrigues that pays tribute to April 25th (date of the Carnation Revolution) and a set of contemporary buildings of great architectural value: the Municipal Library by Siza Vieira and the Cultural Centre by Souto Moura. Thanks to its many esplanades and the Municipal Tourism Booth, more and more people are now being attracted to this part of the city. Close by is the Gil Eannes Ship, transformed into a Museological Nucleus and the Sea Centre, it is one of the most sought out spots in northern Portugal. Continuing, and still very close to the river, the next stop is Viana's Wharf as well as the Recreational Marina, constituted by two docks, one downstream from the Eiffel Bridge (one of the city’s ex-libris) and the other upstream. On the city’s east side, the Argaçosa Fluvial Beach seduces not only beachgoers, but also those who love rowing, since in this area is located the Rowing Centre of Viana do Castelo. It is also here, in the D. Prior Watermills that the new City Park was born, a place with great scenery and where the Centre for Environmental Monitorization and Interpretation is located. |
