Lindoso Stretching along the northern slope of the Amarela and Cabril mountains, on the left bank of the Lima river, Lindoso, finalist of the 7 Wonders of Portugal – Villages in the category of Villages in Protected Areas, is a typical Minho village that maintains a rural appearance thanks to its old granite houses. Of the built heritage, stands the “Afonsino” Castle, classified as a national monument, built in the 13th century and object of several reconstructions and renovations throughout the times. Nowadays, it is transformed into a living space, housing an interpretive centre where we can follow the evolution of history and human occupation in the territory. Close by is the Lindoso Door of the Peneda-Gerês National Park which provides visitors with a space to visit and information about the protected area, as well as about sixty granaries, the largest collection of 18th and 19th century constructions of this type in the country, and an obligatory reference for whoever speaks of or visits Lindoso. The Parish Church, a simple construction of romanesque origin, is also worth seeing. The landscape’s profile, with deep valleys and where abundant watercourses flow, justified the hydroelectric exploitation of Alto-Lindoso, which started operations in 1992 and is still the country's largest. For all this, and because we are in Minho, a visit to Lindoso is mandatory! |
